A dream realized

I always wanted to study in France. I remember being your age and thinking, "One day, Andee, you'll live in Paris." I do not know why that thought was always with me; it just was. I mean, my parents never traveled overseas, nor did my grandparents. In fact, no one in my family spoke French! The only person I knew who spoke French was my high school French teacher, Mr. Derro. He always used to say, "Est-ce que vous voulez un zéro de Derro?" (He was a very funny man and a wonderful teacher!) Even my brother and sister studied Spanish in high school while I continued with my love for French and my desire to live in Paris. (And you now know that I also speak Spanish and lived in Spain, too, but that's a whole other story!)

So, imagine my surprise when I was finally in college and given the opportunity to study in Paris at the Sorbonne. FORMIDABLE! INCROYABLE! FANTASTIQUE! Not only was it an amazing experience that helped shape who I am to this day, but it is a place in which I believe I will live again. I hope that you will get a feel for why Paris is so special through this blog. Perhaps you'll want to visit and live there someday, too! Que pensez-vous? (What do you think about that?!) Allons-y, mes amis!

Fantastique! Inspirational!

Seems like you've got the whole posting thing down, and I can't wait for more!

I think that it would be very fun to go to France because I know many people that have to Paris and they have said that it is really nice.

Merci, Sally! Thanks to YOU this blog is up and running with a snazzy layout!
And Zac, your friends are correct about Paris! I surely hope you get to go to France someday, too!

I feel the same way now that you did back then. I always thought that it would be really nice there. Last year I went to Epcot and even though the scenery is a lot different there I got the rough output of what Paris is like and maybe someday I will live there.

In my opinion it seems that you love teaching french. Well since you've been to France, why wouldn't it be fun to teach it to others! It's really cool that you got to study in France. I hope you get to live there again someday!

I think it would be really amazing to learn to speak French and be able to live in two very different cultures. Paris, along with the French culture, sounds really beautiful and interesting.

When I was ten my family and I actually went to Paris for three days during April break. (The rest of the week we spent in the countryside) I loved it there and we went to many museums and famous Cathedrals. Of course we got lost a few times as well, and all I knew how to say was "Parlez-vous Anglais?" But it was the best vacation I've ever been on, and I can't wait to go back there in a few years because I'll know more french!

It's so nice to see that so many of you want to experience Paris and France someday! You will LOVE it! Casey, I remember going to EPCOT years ago and thinking that it was such fun to be in "France"! And Jack, how cool is it that you'd like to be a high school exchange student? Cassidy, I definitely will live in Paris again -- perhaps you'll go on vacation and visit me there! Isabella, your French can take you to oh so many wonderful places in the world! And Hannah, I love your story! Just think how much more you already know since that trip! You'll "wow them" with your language skills the next time you're in France! C'est vrai!

That is a great ambition, and I bet you were very excited to fulfill it. Maybe if I have something I want to accomplish, I will think about you and how you did, and it will inspire me to do the same. I bet France was beautiful and it would be fun to go there maybe some day!

I would love to live in paris! It would be neat to learn more about the culture, and the people there.

Madame Schmearer said...

Hailey, you are definitely a person who will realize her dreams and perhaps a reward for achieving one of those dreams will be a trip to France! Think big!
Olivia, I could totally see you living in Paris! Keep the dream!

I hope it's OK for an outsider to jump on the blog, Madame S. I'm so very impressed with the integration. Wonderful background (where does Sally shop for those?) and a terrific opening post. I had to join the conversation.
I'm singing in my head a song from a very old Judy Collins album (Who Knows Where the Time Goes, 1968). It's called My Father:
"My father always promised me that we would live in France,
We'd go boating on the Seine and I would learn to dance..."

I've not yet made it there, but I know many who have, including my sister. They say it's hard to come back!

I would probably love to go to France.I've never gone out of the country and would love to see what it would be like.

I would love to go to Paris more than anything. I'd just love to go to Europe in general, but Paris more than most other places. I think if I were to study abroad any where though it would most likely be London...

Sally made the header herself and found the background online.

I'm so glad that you were able to follow your dream because that's what really matters in life, and so many people never even realize what their dream even is. I would love to go to France to learn about the culture first hand and test my conversational skills in a different language outside of the classroom environment.

I think that that would be amazing I have always wanted to go to France. My mom is very french and when she was little her and her family use to speak french a lot. So that would be so cool if i could go there and learn more french so maybe we could speak it more often. Plus going to Europe would be great!

Paris is one of my favorite cities! I spent a week there and did all the sites: Musee d'Orsee, Eiffel Tower, bateaux on the Seine, Notre Dame, ...oh,I want to go back right now!! I hope ALL your students travel there someday.

Jack Salamone said...

Yes I would like to be an exchange student. How was it being away from your family and friend for so long? Not to mention your own home.

I would love to visit and or live in Paris sometime! My mom has already been and said it was beautiful, and my aunt went to college there!

I've been wanting to go to France for so long! I can't wait till I'm able to go. I also can't wait to be fluent in French. Congrats on being able to fulfill your dream!

Isabella Emiline said...

I'm also planning to be an exchange student (although South Portland High School doesn't have a program!). I'd love to go somewhere in Europe, especially Paris, because one of my goals is to be able to speak French fluently.

Madame Schmearer said...

Mr. Koelker and Mrs. Burns, welcome to our blog...or should I say, "bienvenue"? I absolutely know (and love!) that Judy Collins tune and think I still have that album stashed somewhere in a closet! So very cool that your sister lived there! And Mrs. Burns, I remember when you went to Paris! Perhaps we should have you dig out some pics and come show our class?!

Madame Schmearer said...

It's so interesting to me that several of you have family members who have studied/lived in France and that some of you have also been fortunate enough to have visited Paris, even if briefly! I am also so very impressed with the fact that some of you would like to eventually be exchange students -- what a wonderful experience! You all have so much to see and the world has so much to gain from you, too!

I would love to study in French, as a matter of fact I would love to speak fluent french... I hope one day I could study there. Or perhaps go to college.

My cousin's in Scotland right now for college, she recently went to Paris (and Spain) for vacation, and she said both of them are really beautiful and were so much fun to visit. I hope I'll be able to do something like that someday, I think I'll travel around Europe when I'm in college.

Ive always wanted to go to France, particularly Paris. Id go pretty much anywhere in the world actually. I think there's a lot to learn from every country, but France sounds especially wonderful. We should take a field trip there. For a couple months...... years...eh?

Clara, you're lucky!

I really, really, want to live in France at sometime in my life.
I have wanted to study abroad there since my cousin did while she was a junior in college.

Casey Fournier said...

Comment to Zac: I also know people that have been to France and they said it was really cool. I would really want to go because of what other people have said

Alright so what I meant to say is that I would love to experience the PARISIAN (Okay now that's spelled right) culture. Also my mom went there when she was a teenager and shes says it's amazing. But I'd really love to go shopping there and get some good eating in. But since I'm terrified of going across huge bodies of water, because Cody (sister) MADE me watch titanic when I was like 4. I think it would also be fun to study there but I want to go to college at Oxford. But, I would love to travel there and maybe have a house like on the country side. Also Emmas house would be right down the street and during summer we would go there and then go to the beaches and go shopping. Alright I think this might be long enough now because I felt like writing my life story inside this.

It has always been my 2nd life long dream to go to Paris. When I was a little girl I would always tell my parents that I would live in Paris someday after I learned how to speak French. And I still pray to God that someday I can live in Paris with my family there with me. Because I don't think that I could live anywhere by myself without my caring and lovely family.

Madame Schmearer said...

A field trip to France, Sam? Not sure we'd be back by 2:15! I KNOW you will go there someday and I hope to hear all about it! And Hawa, going to Paris is your 2nd life long dream? I'm now interested in what takes the number one spot?
