Grammaire et Gargouilles (Grammar and Gargoyles)

I must clarify something about my grammar class because so many of you were very concerned about my "faceless teacher"!  I did, in fact, have "une prof" that would discuss grammar and work on writing skills with us, but then there was a separate part of the class at which time we would all put on headphones and listen to recordings and then repeat after the person on the tape.  This was to practice our pronunciation and if we didn't say something correctly or if we missed a section, all of a sudden a voice would appear in our ears telling us to "essayez autre fois" (try again).  I did not know that I was "attached" to another person, so the first time I heard someone all of a sudden speaking in my ears, I jumped!  I eventually got used to the routine, but it was a bit odd at the beginning, for sure.  Perhaps I should try that with you sometime?  We could all put headphones on and then I could go to another room while you repeat after a tape.  Would you jump, too, if all of a sudden you heard my voice but didn't see me?

Having someone that I couldn't see speak to me through headphones was odd, for sure, but walking along the Seine past Notre Dame everyday was even MORE of an out-of-body experience!  Here is a brief video of Notre Dame for you to learn just a bit more.  The stained glass windows are gorgeous and I was fortunate because I never had to stand in lines -- perhaps that's because I lived there and could visit anytime I felt like it!  Lucky me! And listen carefully for the part about the gargoyles...

In my next post, you will see that walking past Notre Dame was not the only bonus of heading to a grammar class at 5:00 everyday.  I also passed a patisserie.  Do you know what that is?  You will soon learn...and I know you will like it!

Que pensez-vous maintenant de ma classe de grammaire et de Notre Dame?  Et que pensez-vous des gargouilles (gargoyles)?

Wow, those gargoyles are very beautiful, but kind of creepy at the same time.
I still think I would prefer to have an actual teacher all the time.

I hope you never make us talk to a CD, I would be way to creeped out

I think that it is good that you sometimes would have had a teacher actually in class because it probably made it a bit more interesting. But still- never make us talk to a CD because, well, that's just creepy. It would be so worse than talking on the phone or something like that. I like the gargoyles, I think they were cute. And it would be oh super cool if they came alive and ran around the streets of Paris at night. That would be sooo awesome.

Paris sounds like it would be really cool but a little creepy at night. Was it? Walking down a dark alley with gargoyles looking down on you. Weird!

Wow, it would frighten me to be in a class and to hear a voice but not see anyone. How big were your classes? Notre Dame is really pretty, those gargoyles are really cool, mais, I don't think I will be walking around there at night!

Wow, Notre Dame looks so... The gargoyles are pretty, but I'd like to see them when they were alive.
I think that for near the end of the year we should try out using the talking through the computer. It sounds like fun.

The Gargoyles seem really cool! I would probably jump if I heard someone's voice but didn't see them. Although I'm not sure if I want to talk to the CD.

I think that never seeing your teacher would be a very weird experience and I don't think I would like it that fast. But then again, if you didn't have a teacher in the room then there would be a few perks, such as chewing gum. (:
I really enjoyed the video because I have actually been to Notre Dame and it brought back a lot of memories from when me and my family went there. Even the little cafe with the red awnings was familiar, as me and my family had gone there three or four times for lunch, dinner or crepes for an afternoon snack or dessert.

I love the buildings in France. I wish America had places that old, they're really beautiful. I don't think that I would like having a recording. An actual teacher is much better for me. But it would be fun to try it out sometime.

a patisserie is like a cafe/deli right? That's one of the things I think I'd love about Paris, the cafes and bakeries on every corner. I would be very freaked out if I had to learn grammar the way you did. Not necessarily because of the voices but more because the whole point of learning a language is to communicate with people of different cultures and locations! I do so well with French when we talk it out in class or with my sister... What did you do if you had a question?

Umm, having a teacher speak to you through headphones that you couldn't see would make me jump too. I would rather have the actual teacher in the room teaching me french. But I also think that it was a good way of learning french!

Woah, that is a different way of teaching! Did you ever get to see the person you were talking to? Was there any English spoken in your classes, or was it just French? I think I like it better when you're able to see who you're talking to.

Those gargoyles are so pretty. And if I were you I would have started a conversation with the person on the other side of the headphones. Also, Aidan's been to Paris and has seen that before, he really wanted me to tell you that.

I think that hearing voices tell you wring, try again is really creepy. I wish that gargoyles could actually come alive. Who knows, maybe they do.

WOW, notre dame is so beautiful, i would just love it. The gargoyles are really cool, but they kind of are scary, and I would get a little creeped out by them!

That would be fun to have class without seeing the teacher sometime that would be really fun. The gargoyles were amazing and the stained glass must be amazing to see in real life.

Ive always wanted to see hardcore gargoyles. There sick! I think hearing just your voice would be quite amusing actually. Maybe you should just hide in the closet and have a microphone running to a small ampliphier that is hid somewhere in the room. Or several amps so your voice comes from all around.

Wow I think i would react the same way you did. I bet that voice would have creeped me out too. But walking by Notre Dame everyday would have been great!

Having an actual teacher is way better than just having earphones you have to listen to! But if we had to listen to you through earphones I would be snapping my head left and right trying to see where you were talking from! Even knowing I was listening to you through headphones! The gargoyles would REALLY freak me out! Not during the day of course, But just the idea of them at night is pretty creepy!

When I read the part about you jumping after you heard the mysterious voice, I just HAD to smile to myself, because I would do the same thing! My mom has a mini gargoyles that I used to be soooo frightened of when I was younger because they are just so odd!!

those gargoyles are pretty creepy but cool because we never see them here. I wouldn't like to learn grammar like that because i don't think it would stay in your head because your just repeating it i would have to study it.

I would have done the same thing you did when you heard another persons voice telling you to try again, I would have tried to find out if it was just in my head/imagination or if it was real. I kinda like the gargoyles but they do creep me out and why the heck are they like standing on the side of the building? Aren't they usually like on a standing position on the building not like off the side position?

Isabella Emiline said...

Woah, can you imagine building that? There's so much detail! If I could get up close to a gargoyle, I would probably stare at it really hard or talk to it or something. Because who know, maybe they do come alive at night! By the way, directly translated, gargouilles is "waste-gas mains". Hmm.

When I think of Paris I think of buildings that look like they are going to jump out at you. But they are so well crafted that they have everything that a real animal would have. I have wanted to go to Paris and just look and take in all the buildings and monuments.
